Launch of the new Chepstow Cycling Club
131 years after Chepstow Cycling Club was first formed, a group of local cycling enthusiasts have got together to re-launch the club. Mike Gorshkov, the new club chair said ‘we want to create a friendly local club that is open to all riders from racing cyclists to leisure riders. We see lots of people cycling in Chepstow and the surrounding areas and want to bring them together to make new friends.’ Simon Napper, the club secretary said ‘we had over 200 likes on our new Face Book page in a week of it being set up and 40 people came along to an exploratory meeting to get ideas about what local people want from their new cycling club. It is really exciting to have such enthusiasm’.
The new club is being launched on 4th January 2017 at 7.30pm in the Drill Hall, Chepstow. The club kit has been designed and will be showcased on the night. It features the badge first used by Chepstow Cycling Club in 1888, which is on display in Chepstow Museum, linking the new club with its history.
At the launch people will be able to join the club, paying a £20 membership fee for the year. This will give members access to regular club rides; discounts in local shops; regular talks on a variety of cycling related themes; races and competitions; and a whole new group of friends. James McManus, the club treasurer will be talking about this on the night, recognising that this is a new venture and the more members join, the more the club will be able to offer.
The launch will include talks by staff from the Severn Valley Cycle Shop – Marcus Carrozzo will be talking about bicycle maintenance for safe winter cycling.
If you have had a new bicycle for Christmas then at the launch you will be able to get it security tagged by the Lower Wye Neighbourhood Policing Team. Local Crime Prevention Officer, Geraint Reynolds said ‘I’m delighted the club has asked us to help with the launch and to work with them to ensure local bicycles are security tagged’.
The new club is sponsored by Baa Brewery, who will be there on the night to showcase their latest beers. It should be a great evening, so put the date in your diary: 4th January 2017; The Drill Hall, Chepstow; 7.30pm
